Mary asks…
How can i handle my bird with both of us being comfortable?
Hi, I am 14 years old. I have an about 13 year old yellow crested cockatoo named Sydney, He is a male, and has had a tough past life. My grandmother had diabetes and died about 11 years age. Before that she had bought Sydney as a little baby bird, and was so close to him that she showered with him. My grandfather hated this bird but it made my grandmother happen. Sydney was constantly out of his cage, and constantly handled. My grand mother dies about 11, 12 years age. And left the bird to my grandfather.
My grandfather tried to let him out of the cage, but when he tired to get Sydney back in cage, he would scare him with a bat. or a broom. After that Sydney was not allowed out of the cage. My grandfather then passed it own to my uncle. but wen my uncle had kids he gave him to us.
My mother started to work with him and got pretty far, doing step up and handleing him well, untill he bit her, and now he hates her for some odd reason. He will try to attack her or anyone that comes near the cage, except me.
I have diabetes as well and my parents think that Sdyney sneces that and remebers my grandmother. Well anyways that is his back ground information as a bird with a tough life.
i am not sure if he remebers it, but he dose get scared easily and i dont blame him. He is my life though.
he is living in my room right now. and i am able to take him out a few times a day. He kisses me and cuddles with me and does step up right on to my hand no promblem the only thing that is a promblem is that he seems uncomfortable on my hands. he will start moving his feet tryiing to get a better grip and then if i hold both of my hands together he will go on them but wag his tail. i dont no what this means. I have been working with thim for a few weeks and this has not happened before. any suggestions on how to hold my hands to get him comfortable???

For a bird the size of a cockatoo, hands can be slightly disconcerting. They’re plenty big for a smaller bird, but just too small for your darling. Instead, after picking him up, put him on your forearm. It’ll seem more stable for him, and he’ll likely go there with no problem. Plus, it’ll be easier for you.
But, based on his behavior, i’d be willing to bet he was trying to get to your shoulder. If he was truly close to his first two owners, he was probably allowed on the shoulders of them. For a bird, this is the best bonding place. It allows them to be close to your face. You need to be cautious of this, though. Unless you truly trust this bird, and he truly trusts you, this can have bad side effects. If a bird is on your shoulder before there’s been an established bond, it can cause aggression (as he’ll see himself to be “above” you). If, however, he is as loving as you say he is toward you, he may be searching for that last step of love. Test this by putting the back of your head toward the bird slowly. If he reaches to “preen” your hair, he’s bonded to you and having him on your shoulder might help him adjust to the home better. If he doesn’t, don’t let him on your shoulder just yet. I’m probably being a bit over cautious here, because you’re fairly young (no offense). But, the bird does have a fairly large beak, and i would hate to see anything happen to you because a few steps were rushed. Regardless, the forearm is a very suitable next step. And, i’ve no doubt, he’ll soon be on your shoulder following you throughout the house.
Good luck to you!

Is it possible to have an all-in-one party??
I am wondering if its possible to have a Halloween (for all ages) / Birthday Party (24yr old male) / Baby shower (ohh that’s a mouthful) All-In-One??
If so, please give ideas. My sons birthday is Nov. 1 and he and his wife are expecting a baby around the same time. So I would like to kill 3 birds with one stone. Just dont know how to incorporate all of them together or if it’s even possible.
Sincere Ideas will be greatly appreciated !!
Thanks ahead

Ok…that is a mouthful!!!
Have everyone comes in costume for what the “baby will be when they grow up. So they’ll be in costume..but geared more towards occupational yet can still be creative.
Gifts can be either for the Dad to be or baby on the way.
Food and decorations can still be halloween geared ( orange & black) and games can be both- Would shy away from whole scare your pants off theme and make a more family friendly theme due to those invited.
Put All in one on your invitations to!!! Guests will appreciate covering all bases on one day instead of multiple parties and gift giving. Favors can be halloween candy in cellophane bundles with baby decoration piece tied on

why did the little bird die? i don’t understand it.what did i do wrong?
i found this baby bird yesterday on the floor and it was crying. it had fallen off a tree. i wasn’t sure which tree so i got it…made a nest for it…fut the nest in a hamster cage i had (there was no hamster in it)…made porridge for it and put some water for it. every time it used to see me it would open its mouth so i can feed it and that’s what i did. i fed it 2 times and after it went to sleep. because my mum wouldn’t let me bring it in i had it in the guest apartment. every few hours i was checking on is till the time i went to sleep. this morning i showered really fast…got dressed and dashed out to go and feed it. when i went it was stiff so i touched it to see if it was sleeping but it had died. why did it die?
it was young but it should have at least lived for a few days.
what did i do wrong?
i really thought i could mother that birdy and help it till it grew up.
btw after i berried it. poor thing.

Caring for baby wild animals is tricky. Even if you do everything by the book, there is a good chance they won’t make it. Don’t beat yourself up about it. There could be any number of reasons why it didn’t make it. It might not have been warm enough, not enough food, not the right kind of food, disease, injury sustained during the fall..
I applaud you for trying to help, not many people would go out of their way for a helpless animal. At least you tried.

HELP! Quaker bird plucking her feathers???
O.k so I have 2 quaker parakeets: a male and a female.
the female (named Cookie) is plucking her feathers (in between her wings near the tail). It kinda worries me because she has no feathes in that little spot. But she has these weird green pointy things my mom thinks it’s probably because new feathers are gonna grow. But she keeps on scracthing.
Theres this website where I subscribed and weekly i receive emails with tips for my birds. It says that it might be because of some odor or scent (my mom uses alot of incense).
Cookie is a year old (since time she was born in may of ’07)
She and Pipo (male one) having having sex and I thought it might be that females pluck their feathers so they can lay eggs. It happened to my female budgie parakeet, but I didnt know it could happen to quakers. also i do give them ALOT of attention (i treat them like babies). They shower regulary like once a week or sometimes every 2 or three weeks. HELP what can i do about this??? why does she do that
this is the email:
“I decided to sit down and write this message because
I just finished training one of our clients cockatoos who
was a bit of a feather picker.
This bird picked his feathers because his owner was
a smoker, and the smoke was irritating this birds
skin. So the bird was constantly trying to relieve
this irritation by picking his feathers.
However….
Just because you might not smoke, doesn’t mean that
some cologne, scented candle or a vast amount of
other products you use in your home won’t irritate your
birds skin.
And if your bird is a feather plucker, and you have not
been giving him regular baths in the shower then give
it a try.”
I can’t go to a vet. its to expensive and with the economy this way…..

I have a 3 year old quaker, and had the same problem. My quaker jsut grew out of it, with daily baths, and “disipline”.
The disipline was just when I saw her plucking, I would give her a little tap on the beak with my index finger. And whenever I saw her not plucking, I would give her a few kernels of frozen corn “her favorite”
Also, we went to the vet, and they gave us a very mild anti fungul agent which we put into her bathing spray bottle.
Good luck.
