Im going to make Queso and chips, have some fruit and veggies … but what else is relatively easy and inexpensive (not cheap … but not shrimp). Daniel Your Questions About Baby Shower Cake Ideas Recipes

Daniel asks…

i need a recipe for a cream frosting that would not melt.?

i want to do a twist on a strawberry short cake, its for a baby shower so i want to add decoratives on it like tiny bottles and tiny baby sculptures, however i want to use a heavy cream type frosting, if i refrigerate the cake, will this hold up or will it melt quickly? are there any recipes for cream frostings that will last about 4 hours in the refrigerator? or are there better ideas for a frosting that will go along with the strawberry cake?
thanks in advance

admin answers:

The frosting on the side of the Domino Confectioners Sugar box will work great. It definitely holds up in the fridge, is super quick and easy, and tastes delicious!

Coffee theme Continental breakfast ideas?

Having out-of-towners over this weekend and before they head back, I’d like to serve them a Continental breakfast with a coffee theme (as we are all avid coffee lovers!). I do have one recipe for a coffee cake made with coffee batter in a bundt pan and center is filled with vanilla coffee beans to enhance the aroma…but that’s all I have.

I’d like a creative thing to put on the table for decor and any other clever, cute, useful ideas, menu suggestions. We’ll be about 20 (4 are kids). (We’re having a baby shower the day before, but this continental breakfast is for us icon biggrin Your Questions About Baby Shower Cake Ideas Recipes ). Any help is appreciated.
Thanks Beth..good idea; also things don’t have to be coffee flavored…just ideas on what to serve that’s interesting (sending all leftovers with them).

I’m not afraid to tackle anything creative icon biggrin Your Questions About Baby Shower Cake Ideas Recipes

Joseph Your Questions About Baby Shower Cake Ideas Recipes

Joseph asks…

Need some help with cupcakes (dont laugh!)?

Here is the cupcake I want to make:

http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=370118327f272110VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&autonomy_kw=butterfly%20cupcake&rsc=header_3

I have a few questions.
1) Would buttercream be a good icing to use? Is it strong enough that the butterflies wont fall down?
2) If I use buttercream, can I make them one day ahead and let sit on the counter in a container?
3) Is there a more interesting cake recipe I could use, like maybe poppy seed or something? Otherwise I will go with plain. No chocolate is best, I think.

Thanks for all your great ideas! P.S. This is for a baby shower.
4) If I use a poppy seed cake, would a cream cheese icing be better? Do you think a cream cheese icing would work?

admin answers:

If you are using dairy ingredients, such as butter and cream cheese, in your frosting, your frosting and your decorated cupcakes should be refrigerated.

If you are doing them a day or two ahead of when you need them, a better choice would be to make a frosting with shortening instead of butter. This is what we use in cake decorating classes; it performs well, doesn’t soften like a frosting with butter can, and it doesn’t require refrigeration.

Cake Decorator Frosting

1 cup solid all-vegetable shortening
4 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon clear flavoring (vanilla, butter, almond, or any combination of these totaling 1 tsp.)
1 lb. (approx. 4 cups) powdered sugar

Cream shortening in a large bowl using a stand mixer or hand held mixer. Add water and flavoring while creaming; mix until shortening has absorbed all the liquids. Add powdered sugar and mix until creamy.

Note: This will produce a pure white icing if you use clear flavorings and white shortening. You can also make it using butter flavored shortening to get a little more of that butter flavor; frosting will be a pale/medium yellow. This will yield a soft spreading frosting for covering cakes and cupcakes. For a firmer frosting, use less water (1 less tablespoon will produce a slightly firmer frosting.)

Happy Baking!

admin answers:

Here are a few “shower” cakes

SELENA’S SHOWER CAKE

1 yellow cake mix
21 oz. Can cherry pie filling
2 lg. Pkg. Instant vanilla or chocolate pudding, prepared
16 oz. Can crushed pineapple
2 bananas, sliced
16 oz. Container non-dairy whipped topping

Crumble cooled baked cake. Layer half of crumbs in punch bowl. Top with 1/2 each of pie filling, pudding, drained pineapple, bananas, and whipped topping. Repeat layers using remaining half of each of the ingredients. Garnish with coconut, pecans, whipped topping and maraschino cherries. Excellent for buffet dinners. It makes an attractive centerpiece for the table.

SHOWER CAKE

1 box angel food cake mix
1/3 c. Sugar
1/3 c. Cornstarch
1/4 tsp. Salt
2 cans crushed pineapple
1/2 c. Nuts
2 egg yolk, beaten
1 tbsp. Lemon juice
1/2 c. Maraschino cherries, chopped
1 lg. Container Cool Whip

Prepare cake mix according to package. Cool. Mix sugar, cornstarch, and salt in saucepan. Add juice from pineapple and 2 cups pineapple to cornstarch mixture. Mix well; cook until thick and clear, stirring gradually. Add beaten egg yolks to pineapple mixture. Cook again until thickened, stirring. Add lemon juice, cherries, and nuts; cool. Cut cake cross-wise to make 4 layers. Spread pineapple filling between layers. Frost with Cool Whip.

SHOWER CAKE

2 1/4 c. Blanched slivered almonds
2 c. Cake flour
1 c. + 2 tbsp. Unsalted butter
21 oz. Almond paste
1 tbsp. Vanilla
1 tbsp. Baking powder
1 1/2 c. Sugar
12 lg. Eggs, room temperature

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter and flour one 8 inch and one 9 inch cake pan. Finely grind almonds in processor. Sift flour, baking powder. Set aside. Cream butter with sugar until blended. Beat in almond paste a few pieces at a time. Beat until mixture resembles a smooth paste. Add eggs, one at a time – add vanilla and beat until batter increased slightly in volume (about 5 minutes).
Mix in almonds, then dry ingredients. Bake about 55 minutes – for 8 inch and 65 minutes for 12 inch. Turn cake onto racks and cool completely. (It also can be made in large rectangular pan.)

BERRY FILLING:

2 c. Frozen blueberries, thawed
2 c. Unsweetened blackberries
2 c. Raspberries
2/3 c. Sugar

Combine berries in heavy saucepan, sprinkle with sugar. Bring to boil and reduce heat and simmer until reduced to 2 cups (about 20 minutes). Refrigerate until chilled.

FROSTING:

15 oz. Imported white chocolate, chopped
4 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
2 1/2 lbs. Cream cheese, room temperature
3 tbsp. Vanilla
6 1/2 c. Powdered sugar
1 1/4 tsp. Almond extract
1 c. Sour cream

Melt chocolate in top of double boiler. Stir until smooth. Cool until slightly warm. Beat butter in large bowl, gradually add cream cheese until combined. Beat in both extracts. Add sugar and beat until smooth. Add melted chocolate and mix until just combined; stir in sour cream. Chill if needed to spread.

ASSEMBLY:

Using serrated knife – cut each cake horizontally into 3 layers. Spread bottom layer with 2/3 cup berry filling, leaving 1/2 inch border uncovered. Carefully spread 2 cups frosting over entire layer. Top with middle layer and repeat steps above. Top with top layer and spread frosting all over.
NOTE: If doing layer cake, place smaller 8 inch cake on a piece of cardboard. Cut four dowels – so they are 1/8 inch above top of cake when pressed in bottom layer. Gently place 8 inch cake on cardboard on top of bottom cake tier, centering carefully, with cake resting on dowels. Refrigerate until frosting is set – about 1 hour. Decorate as desired.

Lisa Your Questions About Baby Shower Themes For Boys

Lisa asks…

Baby shower “theme”?

My mother has asked me what my “theme” is. I wasn’t sure what she meant, she said “You know, like superman, or disney or something?” I still don’t get it.

But is Rubber Duckies a good “theme”? For a little boy? I love rubber duckies. I’ve been obsessed with them since I can remember. The first onesie I bought for him was one with duckies on it.

Is that what people mean by “theme”?

And if it’s not, please do share your examples!! I’d love to know what other mommies do for this, baby shower thing and for (I guess) decorating the nursery and such.

admin answers:

We did my sister in laws shower in Rubber duckies… I don’t know if you have an All Occasions where you are or not.. But we got most of her stuff there… BTW we knew she was having a boy and she LOVES duckies too..

Chris Your Questions About Baby Shower Gifts For Mom

Chris asks…

Do baby shower game gifts go to the mom?

Im planning my sisters baby shower and i was mentioning to my friends the games i was gonna have there like the dont say baby game where people have their pins taken away if they say baby.

Well they said that the prizes for those games are suppose to be baby items like diapers that are suppose to be given to the mom at the end of the shower.

Well what would the point of playing the game be if you dont even get to keep the prizes? I thought (and how i was planning it) is that you make goodie baskets for the winners of the games with like candy or girl stuff and they get to keep their prizes.

So i figured id ask since ive only been to one baby shower, how are the game prizes suppose to be?

admin answers:

LOL I thought the same as you when I went to showers, I didn’t understand the point of trying to win a prize and then it isn’t even for you….. At my baby shower we had to sets of prizes one was for my baby and I and the other was for the game winner… We had things like lotions, candles, candy, $5 sonic gift cards…. You can do it however you would like!

Carol Your Questions About Baby Shower Gifts For Mom

What are some ideas for a gift to give to the mom for the baby at a baby shower?

I am going to my friends moms baby shower in 2 weeks and i dont have a gift. Its a girl and its due September 22nd and i look for sales but it is all summer stuff. I need some help, please send me links to stores on the internet that have some cute cheap fall clothes(FOR GIRLS)!

admin answers:

Check the mother’s gift registry. Your friend should be able to tell you what stores her mom is registered with. You can often look at the store’s website and order online. And the mother often chooses gifts in a range of prices, so you can choose what you can afford. Also, the gift registry will tell you if someone has purchased the items for the mother already.

Helen Your Questions About Baby Shower Gifts For Mom

Helen asks…

Would it be rude to give a donation to charity in the mom’s name for a baby shower gift? (this mom has it all)?

The mother already has SO much stuff and is wealthy. Would it be rude of me to make a donation to charity in her name rather than give a gift?

admin answers:

No! Not at all! Some of my friends are very wealthy, and I donated a llama to some little town in the name of her son. He loves to check in on the llama, and he gets pictures of the llama and all the people it’s helping. This kind of gift is great for a child, but I don’t for an adult.

Paul Your Questions About Baby Shower Gifts For Mom

Paul asks…

Baby Shower games that determine when the gifts are opened?

I’m looking for a baby shower game that would result in a gift being opened every now and then throughout the shower. I have in my head the idea of maybe, every time someone says “baby“, Mom opens a gift. (But then what would stop people from just saying “baby” a bunch of times so she opens them all at once?) Does anyone have any good ideas on how we could work that?

admin answers:

That sounds like a great idea! Might make the tedious ‘Oh, that’s so cute!’ of a baby shower a bit more bearable for everyone involved icon biggrin Your Questions About Baby Shower Gifts For Mom

I doubt that people would say ‘baby’ over & over – that would take the fun out of the game.

Don’t forget the diaper cake at your shower. They are a fun way to get conversations rolling….and are much more practical than flowers!! Think of all the diapers you’ll get!! Do one in a safari theme….set the tone on the gift table where it will be featured!!

Just an idea…..

Thomas Your Questions About Baby Shower Themes For Boys

Thomas asks…

I need ideas for a baby showedr theme?

We’re throwing a baby shower in October for a baby boy and need ideas for a theme. There’s gonna be about 40-ish people there, so it’s going to be a larger crowd. We had one good idea by having a tea party themed shower, but then someone else said tea parties are more of a girl theme. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks!

admin answers:

I found this one adorable! ❤
It’s for a girl, but you could change the colors. =)

Halloween baby shower for girl?

I would like to have a halloween theme for my baby shower, however, everything I see seems to be about boys. How can I adapt this theme for a girl?

admin answers:

I love Halloween!!!
Maybe pick a Halloween theme of your own- for example you could do Pumpkins, mini pumpkins for baby to come and big pumpkins for momma- then do cupcakes with baby pumpkins and get decorations to match, plus orange is a girl color!

Or do baby spiders and big momma spiders, little black kittens and momma cats- or do a combination of everything

this is a GREAT website with fun games and awesome ideas

even suggests doing a pumpkin carving contest which would be SUPER different and so much fun compared to the regular baby shower games out there

Joseph Your Questions About Baby Shower Themes For Boys

Joseph asks…

I havent found out the sex of my baby- So what would be a good theme for the baby shower?

I know normally the theme for a baby shower is-
“Its a Boy”

or

“Its a Girl”

But I dont know what it is- What is a theme I could use?
=]

admin answers:

Ur theme should be around the not knowing of ur sex..

How neat would that be..

U can try out old wives tales for telling the sex of the baby (like the string and the ring and what not and have everyone vote on what they think the sex is..!!)

u could do it in light colors that are gender neutral and just have fun with the fact that u chose not to know..

Baby shower themes for a girl?

I have a friend who is 6 months pregnant with a baby girl, & I’m trying to plan a baby shower for her. She says that she likes the “teddy bear” theme, which is kind of hard to find ideas for since it’s a baby girl. Any suggestions or pics to share?

admin answers:

If you can’t find actual teddy bear party supplies, you could just get pink and purple (or her favorite colors) paper products and then decorate the tables with small stuffed teddy bears.

Can Anyone Help On A Baby Shower Theme?

I am planning a baby shower for my cousin. She is having a baby girl. Any suggestions on the Baby Shower Theme?

admin answers:

I think you should go with a color theme, such as pink and brown! You will be amazed at just how much things are pink and brown and it gives the shower a unique touch. However most people don’t pay attention to decor, they are usually interested in food, games and presents and of course the mommy to be!

CREATIVE AND DIFFERENT girl theme baby shower?!?!?

My sister is having a girl and I’m planning her shower…her and her husband are both police officers…..I was thinking of doing a cop theme (but a cop theme isnt the most “girly-est”)….. I want to do something different, that people will be talking about after they leave….I’m very creative with decorations and planning…but I need a theme!!!! I don’t want to do the obviously “princess” theme for a girl…something different and creative..any ideas?!?!? or if I went with a cop theme, how I could jazz it up as girly?!?!?……..

admin answers:

For a cop theme your could order the cake with a little baby girl on top with a lopsided cop hat on.She could have a little gun and some where it says “Freeze its a girl”
