I need some good ideas for easy party food?
My son is turning 5 and we are haviong family over for a small gathering ( food, cake and presents). Im going to make Queso and chips, have some fruit and veggies … but what else is relatively easy and inexpensive (not cheap … but not shrimp). Anybody have a recipe for tortillia and cream cheese rolls? I had those at a baby shower and they were addictive.
Anyways- just need some suggestions!

Finger foods are always a hit as long as you have enough of them to last throughout the party.

Daniel asks…
i need a recipe for a cream frosting that would not melt.?
i want to do a twist on a strawberry short cake, its for a baby shower so i want to add decoratives on it like tiny bottles and tiny baby sculptures, however i want to use a heavy cream type frosting, if i refrigerate the cake, will this hold up or will it melt quickly? are there any recipes for cream frostings that will last about 4 hours in the refrigerator? or are there better ideas for a frosting that will go along with the strawberry cake?
thanks in advance

The frosting on the side of the Domino Confectioners Sugar box will work great. It definitely holds up in the fridge, is super quick and easy, and tastes delicious!

Nancy asks…
Coffee theme Continental breakfast ideas?
Having out-of-towners over this weekend and before they head back, I’d like to serve them a Continental breakfast with a coffee theme (as we are all avid coffee lovers!). I do have one recipe for a coffee cake made with coffee batter in a bundt pan and center is filled with vanilla coffee beans to enhance the aroma…but that’s all I have.
I’d like a creative thing to put on the table for decor and any other clever, cute, useful ideas, menu suggestions. We’ll be about 20 (4 are kids). (We’re having a baby shower the day before, but this continental breakfast is for us
). Any help is appreciated.
Thanks Beth..good idea; also things don’t have to be coffee flavored…just ideas on what to serve that’s interesting (sending all leftovers with them).
I’m not afraid to tackle anything creative

Cofee or mocha flavored yogurt is the only thing that comes to mind- besides the baked goods.Maybe serve sliced banana chunks to dip in the yogurt.

Need some help with cupcakes (dont laugh!)?
Here is the cupcake I want to make:

I have a few questions.
1) Would buttercream be a good icing to use? Is it strong enough that the butterflies wont fall down?
2) If I use buttercream, can I make them one day ahead and let sit on the counter in a container?
3) Is there a more interesting cake recipe I could use, like maybe poppy seed or something? Otherwise I will go with plain. No chocolate is best, I think.
Thanks for all your great ideas! P.S. This is for a baby shower.
4) If I use a poppy seed cake, would a cream cheese icing be better? Do you think a cream cheese icing would work?

If you are using dairy ingredients, such as butter and cream cheese, in your frosting, your frosting and your decorated cupcakes should be refrigerated.
If you are doing them a day or two ahead of when you need them, a better choice would be to make a frosting with shortening instead of butter. This is what we use in cake decorating classes; it performs well, doesn’t soften like a frosting with butter can, and it doesn’t require refrigeration.
Cake Decorator Frosting
1 cup solid all-vegetable shortening
4 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon clear flavoring (vanilla, butter, almond, or any combination of these totaling 1 tsp.)
1 lb. (approx. 4 cups) powdered sugar
Cream shortening in a large bowl using a stand mixer or hand held mixer. Add water and flavoring while creaming; mix until shortening has absorbed all the liquids. Add powdered sugar and mix until creamy.
Note: This will produce a pure white icing if you use clear flavorings and white shortening. You can also make it using butter flavored shortening to get a little more of that butter flavor; frosting will be a pale/medium yellow. This will yield a soft spreading frosting for covering cakes and cupcakes. For a firmer frosting, use less water (1 less tablespoon will produce a slightly firmer frosting.)
Happy Baking!
